Wounds heal slower in depressed people

Reading time: 1 minute

The state of your mind directly affects how quickly you get better. Depressed people find their wounds heal more slowly than they do in a person with a positive outlook – and a very depressed person’s wounds may even get worse, a new study has discovered. Researchers from the University of Nottingham investigated the speed that foot ulcers healed in 93 diabetics. Over a 24-week period, they monitored the progress of the healing process, and found that the ulcers of those who had a ‘confrontational’ approach – where they wanted to take control – took far longer to heal. However, the ulcers in those who were depressed or anxious didn’t shrink, and seemed not to heal at all. (Source: Diabetologia, 2010; 53: 1590).
