Eggs and nuts are the ultimate brain food

Reading time: 1 minute

Choline—the nutrient in eggs, vegetables, meat, nuts and beans—is the ultimate brain food.

It is essential for healthy brain development, including cell regeneration and signalling between neurons.

We need to be consuming around 500 mg of choline every day to support our brain, say researchers from the University of Queensland.

Choline is like a transporter that can cross the blood-brain barrier to deliver essential nutrients that also include glucose and omega-3 fatty acids.

Using special microscopes, the researchers were able to see choline in action as it travelled across the barrier with the help of the protein FLVCR2.  Choline binds to the protein to make the journey into the brain, which is usually protected to prevent toxins from entering.
