Cranberries are the super food for the gut

Reading time: 1 minute

Be kind to your gut—and one of the best ways is with cranberry supplements.

They counter the inflammatory effects of the standard Western diet that can lead to diabetes and heart disease.

Taking two supplements a day—equivalent to 60 g of fresh cranberries—restores the ‘good’ bacteria in the gut, reduces gut inflammation and strengthens the intestinal barrier, say researchers from University Laval.

They monitored 40 participants, who took one supplement in the morning and a second in the evening, and saw improvements in their gut health after just four days.

Cranberries are especially effective in restoring a healthy gut microbiome because they are rich in polyphenols and oligosaccharides, small fibres that improve bioactivity.
