How the ‘bad’ carbohydrates cause heart disease

Reading time: 1 minute

There are good carbohydrates, and bad carbohydrates – and the bad ones increase your chances of heart disease, a new study has discovered. The bad carbohydrates, which include processed foods such as cakes and biscuits, white bread, and breakfast cereals such as Corn Flakes, have a high glycemic index – which means they quickly raise blood glucose levels. They also reduce the levels of HDL cholesterol, which protects against heart disease. In a study of 47,749 adults in Italy, researchers discovered that women whose diet had the highest glycemic load were also more than twice as likely to develop coronary heart disease. Strangely, the high-glycemic diet affected women in the study more than the men, who seemed to be more immune to the diet. (Source: Archives of Internal Medicine, 2010; 170: 640-7).
