Five portions of fruit and veg? Forget it, you need seven if you want to stay well

Governments have got it wrong when they tell us to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day – it should be seven if we want to maintain good health, say researchers.
Happiness and good mental health are highest among people who eat seven portions of fruit and vegetables every day, say researchers who studied the eating habits of around 80,000 people in the UK.
Researchers from the University of Warwick say that their findings demonstrate the vital role that diet and nutrition plays in our lives, and yet is often overlooked by other researchers.
They accept that raising the bar to seven servings – roughly equivalent to 80 grams of fruit and vegetable – is difficult for some people. Only around 10 per cent of Britons currently eat seven portions; a quarter of the population can manage just one portion a day.
