Western medicine is single-minded in its efforts to reduce cholesterol levels, but the fat has a protective effect, especially in patients with kidney cancer. Earlier studies have found it also helps healthy brain functioning in the elderly.
The fat-which is linked to heart disease-has a protective effect in patients with kidney cancer, and those with low levels are more likely to die from the disease.
Cholesterol also seems to influence the development and progression of other cancers, too, say researchers from the Medical University of Vienna.
Patients with high cholesterol levels were 43 per cent less likely to die from their cancer compared to those with low levels, the researchers have found.
Cholesterol levels may determine just how aggressively the cancer is treated, the researchers conclude.
