AstraZeneca pulls its Covid vaccine after damage claims

Reading time: 1 minute

AstraZeneca has pulled its Covid-19 vaccine after admitting in court papers that it could cause life-threatening blood clots.

The company said it was withdrawing its Vaxzevria vaccine from the global market for commercial reasons, but critics believe the decision was made after it attracted mounting legal claims, including from families of 81 Britons who died after being vaccinated.  Many thousands of others say they have suffered life-destroying effects.

The vaccine can cause rare blood clots known as TTS (vaccine-related Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome), and the company is currently being sued by the families of 50 victims who died from the condition following vaccination, and other cases are about to start.

Concerns about the vaccine’s safety were raised just months after its launch, and many European countries never adopted it.  Even the UK government, which had championed the vaccine as an example of British enterprise, warned that it was not suitable for the under-30s as early as March 2021, three months after it was licensed.

The vaccine was never used in the US.
