A yoga that helps sleep and mental powers

Reading time: 1 minute

Yoga nidra—a guided meditation while the person is lying down—improves our mental abilities, and even creates a better quality of sleep.

The meditation can start having dramatic effects after just two weeks, and even for those who have never tried it before.

A small group of volunteers had their cognitive skills measured before and after the trial, and their brain waves were measured with EEG machines while they slept.

All of them scored higher points across various cognitive skills, including memory and problem solving, and the amount of delta waves being recorded during sleep also increased, say researchers from the Karuna Datta of the Armed Forces Medical College in India.

The study is one of the first to objectively measure the benefits of yoga nidra, the researchers say.

Unlike hatha yoga, which involves physical movement and postures, yoga nidra is a form of mindfulness training with the participant lying down, as if going to sleep, while listening to a guided meditation.  It’s also called yoga sleep, and it creates a state of consciousness that is between waking and sleeping.
