Vitamin C improves survival rate after blood cancer

Reading time: 1 minute

Vitamin C can help people survive blood cancers and even prevent leukaemia.

People with precancerous blood disorders and early-stage blood cancers are often low in the vitamin, and taking supplements every day helped them survive longer, said researchers from the Van Andel Research Institute.

Those who took a 1000mg vitamin C supplement every day increased the chances of survival, and most were still alive three years later.  The vitamin changed the levels of immune-signalling molecules, known as cytokines, which influence inflammation-related processes involved in the growth and progression of abnormal blood cells.

The researchers tested the vitamin on 109 patients with either clonal cytopenia of undetermined significance (CCUS) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Both conditions can develop into acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), an aggressive form of blood cancer that is often difficult to treat.  Half were given the supplements, and the rest were given a placebo.

The researchers point out that medicine has nothing that can prevent CCUS from developing into leukaemia; vitamin C therapy is a promising approach that has no side effects.
