Exercise—doing almost activity, in fact—is good for the brain, keeping us mentally sharp and boosting our ability to remember.
Yoga and Tai Chi—the slow movement exercise—are some of the best activities for maintaining good cognitive function, and any low-intensity activity helps improve memory skills.
Researchers from the University of South Australia took another look at more than 2,700 studies involving 258,279 people, whose activities were measured against any improvement in cognition.
They discovered that any activity is better than none, and that low-intensity exercise, such as yoga and walking, can improve cognition. Improvements were seen within a month of starting any type of exercise, and benefits were amplified in children who especially benefited from exercising. It also helped people of any age who had ADHD (attention deficit, hyperactive disorder) to focus and reduce impulsive behaviour.
