In fact, the level of activity – such as cycling, walking longer distances or even getting up and down stairs – stays pretty much the same, researchers from the University of East Anglia have discovered.
They surveyed 1,030 people who had a hip replacement to discover the level of activity before and after the operation. Because the operation reduces the pain when moving, the researchers expected to see an increase in activity – but were surprised to discover there was almost no difference.
They suspect that most people carry on with their usual daily regime despite having a new hip, and aren’t being encouraged to take up more exercise.
