A major alert has gone out about Alli (orlistat), the world’s most popular weight loss drug, after it was discovered it can cause serious organ damage.
The drug-which is available in pharmacies as an over-the-counter remedy-can cause irreversible damage to the liver and kidneys, even at very low dosages.
America’s drug regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have been alerted
Alli also interacts with other drugs, making them ineffective or potentially dangerous. It weakens the effectiveness of anti-cancer drugs and may increase aspirin’s risk of bleeding, for example.
A researcher from the University of Rhode Island has discovered that orlistat interferes with the natural detoxification processes in the liver, kidneys and gastrointestinal tract. As a result, the organs become more toxic.
