Women’s cosmetics make breast cancer more aggressive and fatal

Reading time: 1 minute

Women’s make-up and cosmetics play a key role in the development of aggressive – and often fatal – breast cancer. They contain cadmium, and long-term exposure to the heavy metal helps the cancer spread.
Cadmium doesn’t necessarily cause cancer – but it makes it more aggressive, says Maggie Louie, a professor of biochemistry at Dominican University of California. And 90 per cent of breast cancer deaths are those that have spread to other areas of the body.
Cadmium – a by-product from mining and refining zinc, copper and lead – is also found in our food and water, and in air particles, but women are almost constantly exposed to low levels through their make-up.
The heavy metal disrupts hormone activity by mimicking estrogen, which controls the growth of healthy mammary glands.
