Three supplements are scientifically proven to reduce heart disease, researchers have concluded.
The three that boost heart health are omega-3 fatty acid, which reduces the risk of fatal heart disease, folic acid, which lowers stroke risk, and coenzyme Q10, which protects against all-cause death.
There’s strong scientific evidence for the effectiveness of all three supplements, say researchers from Brown University, who reviewed 884 studies that had involved more than 883,000 people.
But there was no evidence that vitamins C, D and E and selenium kept the heart healthy or prevented type 2 diabetes—a surprising conclusion as C and E are antioxidants, which have been traditionally linked to heart health.
The researchers say that their study demonstrates that supplements do impact on heart health, and people cannot rely solely on a healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean, to maintain the cardiovascular system.
They also think that taking all three supplements together have a positive symbiotic effect that can’t be achieved by taking just one of them in isolation.
There was also weaker evidence that 13 other supplements could also support heart health, and these include omega-6, L-arginine, L-citrulline, magnesium, zinc and quercetin.
