Popping a simple amino acid supplement every day could reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Arginine can reduce the buildup of toxic amyloid proteins in the brain, a hallmark of the disease, researchers at Kindai University in Osaka, Japan have discovered.
In studies with mice, the researchers found that arginine reduced the activity of genes linked to pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are associated with neuroinflammation, a major feature of Alzheimer’s disease.
With none of the drugs working, simple and inexpensive supplements could be the future of Alzheimer’s prevention and even treatment, the researchers say.
L-arginine supplements are safe to take and don’t have side effects. The amino acid supplement converts into nitric oxide, promoting better blood flow, supporting cardiovascular health—and now, it seems, healthy brain functioning. Standard doses range from 3 to 6 grams.
