If you’ve reached the age of 70, taking a multivitamin every day for around two years reduces your biological age by as much as five months.
So, taking a multivitamin for more than two years should have an even bigger impact on our DNA ageing markers, which could translate into living longer, say researchers from Mass General Brigham in Massachusetts.
But even taking a pill for just 24 months reduces the age of our biological markers—known as our epigenetic clocks—by between 2.7 and 5.1 months compared to someone who was not on a multivitamin.
The research team tested the impact of vitamins and cocoa extract—the study was part funded by Mars Edge, which produces the beverage—on a group of 958 people with an average age of 70. They either took a daily multivitamin with cocoa extract, or the vitamin with a placebo, or cocoa with a placebo, or just two placebos.
Unfortunately for Mars, the cocoa extract had no impact on ageing, but the multivitamin did. It had the greatest impact on those whose biological age was greater than their physical age, the researchers found.
