Start moving to keep your brain healthy

Reading time: 1 minute

Any type of exercise—even walking up the stairs—has a positive impact on the brain.

Movement of any sort benefits areas of the brain, and especially the hippocampus, thought to be command central for memory.

This is especially good news for older people who are worried about dementia.  Walking just 15 minutes a day or taking the stairs instead of the elevator could make a big difference to longterm cognitive ability.

Researchers from DZNE, the German Centre of Neurodegenerative Diseases, analysed the physical activity levels of 2,550 volunteers aged between 30 and 94, and took brain images with MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans.

“Even small behavioural changes may have a substantial positive effect on the brain and potentially counteract age-related loss of brain matter and the development of neurodegenerative diseases,” said Ahmad Aziz, one of the researchers.
