Just days after the UK’s Department of Health announced it may start vaccinating newborns, it’s been revealed that children damaged by vaccines aren’t being compensated by the government.
The UK’s Vaccine Damage Payments Unit is applying an industrial injuries measure to determine whether a child has been sufficiently harmed to receive payment.
The Times newspaper has highlighted the case of Katie Stephen, 21, who became deaf in one ear after she was vaccinated with the MMR vaccine. Although the government accepts the vaccination is to blame, it pays compensation only to children who were 60 per cent disabled. As Katie’s deafness does not qualify, she is not entitled to the lb120,000 that would have been made had she lost the hearing in both her ears.
