Red wine could be the key to the French paradox

Reading time: 1 minute

Not that it’s an excuse to eat a bad diet and compensate with a glass of red wine each time, say researchers. Resveratrol is also found in blueberries, raspberries, mulberries and grape skin, so these could be added to the diet instead.

Researchers at Georgetown University have tested the effects of resveratrol on a group of rhesus monkeys, half of whom were fed a healthy diet and the rest ate a diet high in sugars and fats. Half of those on the high fat/sugar diet were also given a resveratrol supplement.

In previous studies, the research team found that resveratrol helped mice live longer and slowed the start of diabetes. It was even as beneficial as aerobic exercise.
