Cannabis could help you sleep

Reading time: 1 minute

Not sleeping?  Taking a cannabis medicinal could do the trick.

They could also improve mood and reduce pain, say researchers from Imperial College London who tracked 124 insomniacs who took cannabis for 18 months.

They reported improved sleep quality that lasted over the 18 months of treatment, and the participants also showed significant improvements in anxiety and depression as well as reporting less pain. About nine percent of the patients reported problems such as fatigue, insomnia, or dry mouth.

But they may have got off lightly, another study warns.  People who take high-dose THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) products increase their risk of psychosis and schizophrenia.

Researchers from the University of Colorado analysed 99 studies that had involved more than 221,000 participants.  Of those who were taking the drug recreationally, 53 percent reported suffering from anxiety, and 41 percent said they had depressive episodes.

Of those who took THC products therapeutically, 47 percent said their anxiety and depression had been helped, although up to 30 percent said they were experiencing greater anxiety or depression.
