People who listen to music every day are much less likely to suffer from dementia. They lower their risk by up to 39 percent.
Playing a musical instrument has a similar protective effect, say researchers from Monash University.
They looked at the impact of music on a group of 10,800 people who were 70 and older, and found that those who consistently listened to music had a 39 percent reduced risk of dementia compared to those who almost never listened to it, and were 17 percent less likely to suffer cognitive decline. Playing an instrument was also beneficial and had a 35 percent reduction in dementia risk.
