Doctors are still handing out drugs to some of their Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients that will worsen the condition and could even kill them.
They are ignoring warnings from drug regulators, and are continuing to prescribe anti-psychotic drugs to up to half of their PD patients. The drugs make PD symptoms worse, and can even kill the patients.
Even though the drugs were considered too dangerous in 2005, doctors have continued to prescribe the drugs to PD patients who also have psychosis, a problem that afflicts up to half of sufferers.
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania discovered the prescribing is still rife when they compared the treatment of 2,597 PD patients in 2002 and again in 2008, three years after the drugs warning was issued. They found no difference in the drugs being prescribed.
