Keto diet better than drugs for schizophrenia and bipolar

Reading time: 1 minute

A keto diet can help improve the symptoms of serious mental problems, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

The low-carb diet can be more effective than powerful drugs, researchers from Stanford Medical have discovered, improving symptoms by around 30 percent.

The researchers recruited 21 people with schizophrenia or bipolar who were already taking antipsychotic drugs, and put them on a ketogenic diet, made up of 30 percent protein, 60 percent fats and just 10 percent carbohydrates.

Most of the recruits also had metabolic syndrome, defined as having three of five conditions: abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, raised blood pressure and raised fasting glucose levels.

After eating the keto diet for four months, nobody in the group had metabolic syndrome, and they recorded a 30 percent lower score rating for mental illness symptoms.

Earlier studies have shown that the diet reduces epileptic seizures when drugs haven’t helped.
