How to bring discipline into your life for success through balance and self-awareness

So, what does success mean to you? Success is individual and can have a personal definition for each of us. However, if we break it down to something generic, then success is about setting a goal and taking steps to achieving it with your best efforts. Many successful people will tell you that they’ve achieved their goals and dreams through discipline. Not that they didn’t experience failure, but that they were disciplined to keep going.

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.” – Jim Rohn

With so much happening in our daily lives, it’s easy to give your Self allowances to take a break, grab a takeout or go out with friends. And although this is a part of life, it can swiftly lead to self-sabotage if you’re undisciplined in your approach. I also like to bring balance into the mix when it comes to success and discipline, as it’s underrated and can be seen as a key factor in sustaining discipline.

Sustainable success

Knowing what you need to give to your Self to stay motivated to push through to achieving your goal is important. And it’s something that you should address as an important task to avoid being pulled into a lull of stagnancy. Self-awareness and understanding the type of person you are and how you operate will help you to create small rituals that will allow you to come back to your balance – the place where you can achieve from in a sustainable way for the long term.

What is discipline?

Discipline is about training, or re-training our behaviours to succeed. If you set a goal to read one book a week, then you need to identify or carve out time slots where you can read, so you can succeed in your goal. Maybe you wake up 20 minutes earlier to read in the morning or at bed time, start utilising your commute or lunch break.

What’s stopping you?

When you come across blocks, figure them out quickly. What’s blocking you? Is it emotional, mental or physical? Blockers can lead to stagnancy because this is the point where many of us give up, instead of working on resolving the blockers or course correcting. So, set your Self up for success by enabling your Self to win. Keep your book by your bedside or carry it in your bag, so if you have 10 minutes you can read a few pages.

Start identifying your blockers as they come up (you’ll eventually have a list of these) and jot down or make a mental note of what you need to do to resolve them to get back to your balanced state to focus on your goal.

What is balance?

Balance is about knowing your Self well enough to know when you’re demotivated or need to give to your Self to get back on track. That giving to your Self may take the shape of spending time with family, or going for a walk or watching a movie. It’s important to timebox these moments – for instance, if you can’t focus give your Self 30 minutes and go for a walk. If you feel like you need some company, give your Self a few hours off in the evening and go have dinner with friends or family. If you’ve had a draining day at work, use your commute home to decompress instead of reading.

Success is in achieving the small steps and goals to achieve your bigger goals.

Here’s how to get you started in your journey to success

  • Write down your motivator and keep it somewhere visible – this “why you’re doing it” will gradually feed into your subconscious and re-focus your energies
  • Get organised to set your Self up for success – do your food preparation, lay out your work or workout clothes for the morning, get your calendar straight and write down your list of things to do the night before
  • Do one thing daily for your self-care – try reading, working out, booking a treatment, running a bath or cooking something nutritious (this will often be things that bring you back to balance)
  • Communicate with your people – let your loved ones know your commitments for the week to free your Self from guilt, obligation and self-sacrifice
  • Reward your Self – celebrate your achievements daily or weekly to keep your momentum going.

It’s important to remember that humans crave growth and change, so use rituals instead of routines. Rituals are frameworks, so they give us the flexibility and freedom of choice to avoid feeling stagnant.

Do you have a morning, afterwork or bed time routine? Try giving your Self options, so these feel more like rituals and allow your Self to be present to enjoy these rituals and the time you spend giving to your Self to bring your Self to balance.

Success is individual and bringing discipline, an understanding of your blockers through self-awareness and balance into the mix will allow you to sustainably reach your goals and build behaviour patterns that you can utilise and optimise to achieve any type of goal.
