If you’re a senior, get on your bike. Cycling is a great way to stay fit, and it also gives a sense of independence, a new study has found.
Researchers from the University of Tsukuba in Japan tracked the health and wellbeing of a group of older people for 10 years to see if regular cycling had a positive impact.
The cyclists in the group were more likely to be alive 10 years later and most were still living an independent life. Many non-cyclists had either died or were in a care home, the researchers found. The health benefits were greatest in those who didn’t drive a car.
The findings reflect earlier research that had found that cyclists were heathier and more socially engaged.
