Fish oils can reduce heart attack and stroke risk

Reading time: 1 minute

Taking a fish oil supplement every day could reduce your risk of a heart attack, stroke, and death from CVD (cardiovascular disease).

The benefits of the supplement are very apparent in people on dialysis, who are at high risk of serious, and sometimes fatal, CVD—but it could protect all of us.

Researchers at Monash University in Australia tested the benefits of the supplement on 1,228 people on dialysis, who were either given four grams of fish oil each day, or a placebo.  Those taking the fish oil were 43 percent less likely to suffer a serious heart problem, the researchers found.

It’s a vital discovery: people on dialysis—usually because of kidney failure—are low in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic), acids crucial for heart, brain, and vision health, which are abundant in fish oils.
