Fat around the middle isn’t always a warning flag for diabetes

Reading time: 1 minute

Storing fat around the waist isn’t always the warning sign for type 2 diabetes that researchers have been telling us.

For some, it could actually be protecting them from the disease, say researchers from the University of Virginia.

It’s all to do with genetic variations, and the idea that increased fat around the abdomen is the first sign of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of health problems that includes diabetes, stroke and heart disease, is too simplistic.

So, before assuming that a thickening waist is an early step down an unhealthy path, doctors should be commissioning some gene profiling first, the researchers add.
