Don’t just offer women mammography, says leading radiologist

Women are assured that mammogram screening is the only reliable test for breast cancer-but it’s not, a leading radiologist has said this week. Although it’s the ‘gold standard’ technology, it misses many cancers.
Mammography is poor at detecting cancers in women with dense breast tissue, it produces too many false-positives (when it detects a cancer that isn’t there), and it exposes women to high doses of radiation, say researchers from the H Lee Moffitt Cancer Centre and Research Institute in Florida.
It’s time to offer other technologies that may be more appropriate for different women, they say.
Leading radiologist Robert Stern from the University of Arizona agrees. Choosing the right screening technology for a woman should be the result of a dialogue between the radiologist and patient.
