Don’t drink water from a plastic bottle

Reading time: 1 minute

Ditch the plastic if you drink bottled water and make sure you’re only using glass.

People who regularly drink from plastic bottles have an extra 90,000 microplastic particles in their body after just one year, researchers from Concordia University in Canada have discovered.

In a review of over 140 scientific articles, the researchers discovered that people on average ingest between 39,000 and 52,000 microplastic particles a year, and bottled water users consume an additional 90,000 particles than people who get their water only from a tap.

The plastic used for water bottles is usually low grade and they shed tiny pieces every time they are handled and exposed to sunlight and temperature fluctuations.

Although it’s never been established that the particles affect our health, the researchers fear that micro particles can cross biological boundaries, enter the bloodstream and reach vital organs which, in turn, could lead to chronic inflammation, cause oxidative stress on cells and hormonal disruption, impair reproduction, and may be a factor in neurological damage and various kinds of cancer.
