Healthy gums aren’t just the result of brushing and flossing—eating a Mediterranean diet can also play a big part.
The diet reduces inflammatory markers in the blood, and this can maintain healthy gums, say researchers from King’s College London.
People who don’t follow the diet—with its emphasis on vegetables, fruits, nuts and oils—are more likely to have gum disease, especially if they eat a lot of red meat, the researchers say.
They monitored 200 patients for inflammatory markers in their blood and found that those who ate a mainly Mediterranean diet had lower levels of circulating inflammatory markers, such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP).
