Calcium supplements increase heart attack risk in elderly

Reading time: 1 minute

Doctors regularly prescribe calcium supplements to older patients in order to help prevent osteoporosis – but the medication could be a killer, increasing the chances of a heart attack. The supplements increase the risk of a heart attack by 30 per cent, irrespective of the age and sex of the patient, a new study has discovered. To make matters worse, another researcher – Prof John Cleland – doubts whether the supplements actually help to reduce the risk of fracture in the first place.
