Indigestion drugs double risk of chronic kidney disease

Reading time: 1 minute

The risk increases with dose; those taking two tablets a day increase their risk 1.46 times, and those taking just one a day had a 1.15 times raised risk.

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University made the discovery when they charted the health of 10,482 participants, with an average age of 63 years.

Some of the drugs are available over-the-counter (without a prescription) and they are designed to help improve GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and indigestion by reducing levels of stomach acid. Drugs in the PPI family include Nexium (esomeprazole) and Prilosec (omeprazole).
