Drinking two to three cups of coffee or tea every day could reduce your risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Caffeine may help keep brain cells active while reducing inflammation and harmful plaque buildup that’s associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
It reduces the risk of cognitive decline by as much as 35 percent but drinking more than three cups didn’t reduce the risk further, say researchers from the T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University.
They tracked more than 131,000 American nurses and health professionals for up to 43 years, starting when they were in their early 40s. During this time, 11,033 people—around 8 percent—developed dementia. But those who drank moderate amounts of caffeinated coffee or tea were notably less likely to be among them.
The protective effect was strongest in people aged 75 or younger, who saw their dementia risk drop by 35 percent if they consumed around 250mg-300mg of caffeine daily—around two to three cups of coffee or tea.
Although green tea wasn’t measured—mainly because it’s not a common drink in the US—the researchers believe they would have seen similar benefits.
