Looking for a natural way to boost testosterone levels? Consider these top-quality shilajit supplements, says Joanna Evans
Not just a “male hormone,” testosterone plays an important role in the health and wellbeing of both men and women, influencing everything from energy levels and muscle strength to libido, mood and overall vitality. As modern lifestyles, stress, aging and poor nutrition can all contribute to declining testosterone levels, many people are turning to natural solutions to support their bodies. Among the growing range of natural testosterone-supporting supplements, shilajit has gained attention for its mineral-rich composition and long history in traditional wellness practices.
Shilajit (pronounced sheel-uh-jeet), from Sanskrit for “destroyer of weakness,” is a natural resin, a blackish-brown tar-like substance formed over centuries from decomposed plant matter. Today it seeps from rocks in high-altitude regions such as the Himalayas and Altai Mountains. It’s rich in trace minerals as well as organic compounds like fulvic and humic acids and has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine as a rejuvenating rasayana to support energy and overall vitality.
But where can you get hold of shilajit, and what should you consider when choosing a supplement? Here’s a quick guide to what to look for along with some top-quality products to try.
Form. Shilajit is available to buy in various forms, but if you want maximum potency, purity and bioavailability with minimal processing, a high-quality pure shilajit resin is generally considered the best option. This is the most natural form of shilajit and comes with a full spectrum of nutrients and bioactive compounds.
However, it can be messy, hard to dose and strong-tasting, so you may prefer the convenience of capsules or tablets. These are often standardized for fulvic acid content and offer consistent dosing, but make sure you check what excipients (inactive ingredients) are included before you buy (see below).
Ingredients. Scan the ingredients list to make sure you’re not getting any unnecessary extras, like sugars, sweeteners, and artificial colorings and preservatives. For capsules or tablets, look for a formula with minimal excipients and avoid those with a long list of bulking agents, fillers and other additives.
Testing. Is the product tested, ideally by a third party, for potency and purity? This is especially important for shilajit as in its raw, unpurified form it can contain heavy metals and toxins. Look for brands that specify third-party testing and have certificates of analysis available for you to view. If you’re unsure about anything, get in touch with the company to check.
Fulvic acid content. Look for products that specify fulvic acid content, as this is the main active component in shilajit. Fulvic acid is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, and the supplements we’ve selected below have a minimum of 60 percent fulvic acid.
High manufacturing standards. Is the supplement manufactured according to stringent quality standards? Look for certifications of good manufacturing practices (GMPs).
