Keto diet could be best if you’re obese

Reading time: 1 minute

If you’re already obese, the best diet could be a low-carb, high-fat keto diet.

When it was tested against the Mediterranean diet, it achieved similar weight loss, but more significantly it was more effective in reducing liver fat, which can influence the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

A research team from the Washington University School of Medicine tested the ketogenic diet against two low-fat diets on a group of 42 obese people who were pre-diabetic.

The keto diet derived just 4 percent of calories from carbohydrates and 73 percent from fat, while half the Mediterranean diet’s calories came from carbs, and the third diet tested, a plant-based approach, got 70 percent of its calories from carbs and 15 percent from fats.

Although weight loss was similar across all three groups, the liver fat reduction was greatest in the keto group.  Half of them were no longer considered prediabetic, compared to just 29 percent in the Mediterranean diet group and 7 percent in the plant-based diet group.
