Exercising and taking omega-3 supplements is a one-two punch on gum disease.
Together, they counter periodontitis, the disease of the gum and teeth that can be the genesis of inflammation in the body, leading to diabetes, heart disease and even some cancers.
The combination approach controls bacterial growth, minimizes bone loss, balances the production of inflammatory molecules called cytokines, and stimulates fibroblasts, the cells that repair and maintain tissues.
Researchers from the State University of San Paulo in Brazil tested different approaches to periodontitis on groups of rats: some were not treated, another group exercised for 30 days and the third exercised and was given omega-3 supplements.
