Yes, cheese can cause nightmares

Reading time: 1 minute

The old wives’ tale seems to be true: eating cheese late at night really can cause nightmares.

In fact, it’s true for all dairy products which can be hard to digest when we eat them late in the evening.  An upset stomach can cause us to have bad dreams and nightmares, say researchers from Montreal University.

They surveyed more than a thousand students about their eating habits and the quality of their sleep. About a third of respondents reported having regular nightmares, with women being more likely to report poor sleep and nightmares, and nearly twice as likely as men to report a food intolerance or allergy.  Students who ate less healthily were more likely to have negative dreams and less likely to remember dreams.

The researchers found that lactose intolerance was associated with gastrointestinal symptoms, nightmares, and poor sleep quality, and they think that eating dairy activates gastrointestinal disturbance, and this affects people’s dreams and the quality of their rest.
