Sitting in front of a screen too long? Astaxanthin supplements could help relieve eye strain, a new study has found.
Astaxanthin is a red fat-soluble pigment with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties—and it’s also good for our eyes, it seems.
Researchers gave 64 schoolchildren, aged between 10 and 14, a 4mg astaxanthin supplement every day for 84 days. The children were using screens for more than four hours a day, and were experiencing ‘computer vision syndrome’, or chronic and acute eye strain. They were also suffering from tired eyes and vision issues.
By the end of the study, the children recorded a 27 percent improvement in their eyes compared to a placebo supplement, including a reduction in strain, say researchers from AstaReal Inc., an astaxanthin manufacturer.
