A Mediterranean diet wards off dementia

Reading time: 1 minute

The Mediterranean diet isn’t just good for you, it’s good for your brain, too, and can keep you mentally sharp into old age.

People who follow the diet have all the nutritional biomarkers, including fatty acids, that slow cognitive decline.

Researchers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln tested the effectiveness of the diet on brain ageing with a group of 100 participants, aged between 65 and 75, who had no cognitive issues at the start of the study.  They answered questions about their diet, their blood was assessed after fasting, and their brains were scanned.

Those who ate a healthy—mainly Mediterranean—diet had slower brain ageing, and had higher levels of biomarkers, including fatty acids, antioxidants and carotenoids, that support brain health.
