Fasting may not be so good if you’re trying to conceive

Reading time: 1 minute

There’s plenty of evidence to suggest intermittent fasting is a great way to reboot your health—but it’s not for everyone.

The elderly should think twice before embarking on the diet, which restricts the time you eat, and it may also not be good for couples who are trying to conceive.

Fasting could cause fertility problems in men and women, affecting egg production and sperm levels, say researchers from the University of East Anglia.

But so far they’ve seen these changes only in zebra fish, and the researchers can’t be sure if similar outcomes would be the same for people.  They suspect it might because it seems to be the way that bodies respond to a food shortage.  The response can affect the quality of eggs and sperm, and these effects can continue even after the fasting period has ended.
