Say something sweet when we sleep to stop our heart racing

Reading time: 1 minute

Does your heart race when you’re asleep?  Try getting someone (or something) to say some calming words, and it should slow down.

Although we may be in deep sleep, our body is still aware of its environment and responds to stimuli.

To test the theory, researchers from the University of Liege spoke calming, and neutral words, to a group of sleeping volunteers while monitoring heart activity with an EEG machine.

The neutral words had no effect on heart rate—but the calming words did, and they also influenced sleep quality.

Most sleep research has focused on the brain, but the new study shows that the heart is affected too.
