Drinking a glass of beetroot juice can halve your risk of a heart attack if you’re already suffering from angina.
Nitrates in the juice keep blood vessels clear and healthy, say researchers from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, who tested the drink on 300 angina patients who had a stent fitted to stop their arteries from closing.
Half the participants were given a 70 ml glass of beetroot juice every day for six months and the rest were given a placebo drink that had had nitrates removed.
After two years, around 16 per cent of the placebo group had suffered a heart attack or stroke, compared with just 7 percent in the group given beetroot juice, and their blood vessels were clearer, and had narrowed only to half the extent of the placebo group.
Angina is a type of chest pain that is caused by reduced blood flow to the heart.
