Governments have got it wrong when they tell us to eat five servings of fruit and vegetables a day-it should be seven if we really want to maintain good health, say researchers.
Happiness and good mental health are highest among people who eat seven portions of fruit and vegetables every day, say researchers who studied the eating habits of around 80,000 people in the UK.
Researchers from the University of Warwick say their findings demonstrate the vital role that diet and nutrition play in our lives-and yet they are often overlooked by other researchers.
They accept that raising the bar to seven servings, roughly equivalent to 80 g/day of fruit and vegetables, is difficult for some people. Only around 10 per cent of Britons currently eat seven portions, while a quarter of the population can manage only one portion a day.
