Arrogant doctors? It’s the way they were taught

Ever wondered why doctors are sometimes arrogant or bullying? It’s because it was the way they were treated at medical school, a new study has found.

Around 20 per cent of students in medical school report some form of mistreatment each year, ranging from disrespect, public humiliation, ridicule and even harassment by their superiors.
Medical school also creates a climate of fear, with just 31 per cent of students reporting the behaviour to faculty or university administrators, say researchers from Michigan State University.

Public humiliation or belittlement was the major cause for complaint, with sexist remarks and requests to do personal favours coming in second and third.

The American Medical Association has accepted that mistreatment is a major issue in medical school, and one that somehow needs to be addressed.
