Radiation and chemotherapy, which is often carried out alongside ADT, can also be a further immune suppressant, say researchers from the University of Texas’s Southwestern Medical Centre.
Although ADT can reduce tumour size at the start, the approach doesn’t kill all the cancer cells, and it suppresses the immune system, which allows the cancer to return in a more aggressive form.
The immune system should be boosted before any ADT treatment begins, and some chemotherapy and radiotherapy therapies should not be done at the same time, said lead researcher DrYang-Xin Fu.
