Prostate cancer is far more common than we thought – because black men are excluded from studies

There’s rarely a balanced ethnic spread when a new study is put together, and black people – as well as other ethnic minorities – are rarely recruited to participate. Extrapolating results to achieve national, or international, statistics becomes a nonsense, say researchers from King’s College London.

But it isn’t always the fault of the researchers. Black communities often mistrust researchers and their motives, and can’t see any benefit in participating.

It would also be helpful if researchers could hear from black survivors of prostate cancer, said lead researcher Dr Charlotte Toms.
