Your kids are right—chill out more.

Chronic stress makes our biological clock tick faster.  That’s the worst kind of stress, say researchers at Yale University, because it’s persistent, and increases your risk for heart disease, addiction, mood problems and post-traumatic stress disorder. The occasional flare-up won’t have those effects.

The researchers tracked the health of 444 volunteers aged from 19 to 50, whose blood was assessed before they answered questions about their own stress levels.

Stress affects people in different ways.  Those who were better able to control their emotions or exercise self-control weren’t ageing faster, the researchers said.  They are the two best ways to counter stress, the researchers say.  Master those two and you’ll also slow the biological ageing process and reduce insulin resistance, which can otherwise lead to diabetes and heart disease.

In other words, they’d learnt to chill.
