Your doctor’s wrong. Drink coffee to stop the heart fluttering

Reading time: 1 minute

Despite what your doctor may tell you, drinking coffee can stop the heart fluttering.

Coffee protects against atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart rhythm disorder that causes the heart to beat too quickly and irregularly, sometimes leading to stroke or heart failure.

Doctors warn patients not to drink coffee, but a new study has discovered that drinking just one cup a day reduces the chances of AFib by 39 percent. And because coffee is also a diuretic, it could be reducing blood pressure levels, say scientists at University of California at San Francisco (UCSF).

The researchers had tested 200 people with AFib or a related condition known as atrial flutter, to discover the effects of coffee and other caffeinated drinks on their hearts.  Some drank one cup of coffee a day, while the rest abstained for up to six months.
