Even light and moderate exercise such as a regular walk or cycle ride can help you live longer, researchers have discovered this week. The benefits can be substantial, say researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine – and they can be achieved without a heavy and sweaty work-out in the gym. People who exercise moderately for just 30 minutes a day, five days a week, reduce their risk of premature death by 19 per cent, and that rises to 24 per cent if you exercise lightly every day. “Just walking to the shops or walking the children to school can lengthen your life”, said lead researcher James Woodcock.
