Yoga helps IBD sufferers cope

Reading time: 1 minute

People with IBD (irritable bowel disease) should take up yoga to help them cope with symptoms, a new study has concluded.

Combining yoga with aromatherapy improves symptoms and helps sufferers cope mentally, a University of Calgary study has found.

They recruited nine IBD patients into an eight-week yoga programme that also included aromatherapy massage.  They completed a daily log and they also reported on sleep quality and levels of anxiety, depression, stress, and physical and mental quality of life.

Although the participants found the programme was very helpful, some felt guilty that they hadn’t kept up with classes; they attended just over half the yoga sessions and, on average, practised yoga on five of the seven days of the week.
